SEWB Counsellor

The primary purpose of the SEWB Counsellor is to help support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in their overall mental health and wellbeing, by providing high level of clinical consultations and therapeutic support, to young people, adults, and families. You will contribute to the delivery of a comprehensive and integrated range of mental health, wellbeing, and healing services appropriate to the needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Community. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will provide individual and group therapy and therapeutic programs to clients, aligned with the SEWB model of wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide psychological/therapeutic services to clients
  • Communicate effectively and build strong relationships with our Aboriginal and Torre Strait Islander community
  • Develop culturally appropriate interventions by collaborating with clients and their communities to develop culturally sensitive intervention plans that respect their cultural values, practices, and beliefs
  • Provide counselling and therapeutic support by offering individual, family, and group counselling sessions using culturally appropriate frameworks, ceremonies, and healing practices to address intergenerational trauma, cultural disconnection, and other challenges
  • Conduct workshops, training sessions, and community education initiatives to enhance cultural awareness, empower individuals, and strengthen community resilience
  • Attend events intended to promote health and wellbeing and advocate for community awareness and participation; Contribute to the ongoing design, development, and evaluation of Budja Budja’s mental health and psychological programs and services
  • Assist in identifying the mental health and wellbeing needs of individuals, groups and the community; and
  • Network and liaise with other service providers to ensure a coordinated approach to health service delivery

About You:

  • Bachelor degree in psychology or social work, or other relevant discipline
  • Full registration with AHPRA/AASW
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in a counselling/therapeutic role
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Australian psychology/social work regulatory framework and ethical standards
  • Ability to develop and implement evidence-based interventions and treatment plans
  • Knowledge and ability to use evidence-based psychometric assessment tools
  • Strong crisis intervention and counselling skills, with experience in providing trauma-informed practice
  • Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills and computer proficiency, including the ability to use client information management systems
  • Capacity to work effectively, both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, with a willingness to take direction
