The Jardwadjali (pronounced Yard-wa-jali) people lived in the northern and western Gariwerd ranges and on the Wimmera Plains to the west.
This region has only half the rainfall of central Gariwerd. As water is scarce in summer, this would have determined where the Jardwadjali could camp. The Gulgurn Manja and Ngamadjidj sites are on the edge of the ranges, from where the Jardwadjali had easy access to the plains and could utilise the rocky uplands’ water and food resources.
We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of this Country, the Djab Wurrung and Jarwadjali people, who have lived on these traditional lands and cared for Gariwerd (Grampians) country over thousands of years. We acknowledge Gariwerd is a special, spiritual place for Aboriginal people, for dreaming stories and the abundance of food, water and shelter it provides. We acknowledge Djab Wurrung and Jarwadjali continued living culture and we give respect to Elders, past and present.
